A Bit About Me.
Thank you for stopping by.
—— About me. ——
My name is Alysa Marie Helvig and I am, as indicated, a fledgling filmmaker. I won’t dress that up any more than it already is; we all have to start somewhere, right? Specifically, I am exceptionally passionate about sound recording, sound design, and post-work, including ADR sessions, dialogue editing, and music editing. I have composed a bit in the past for a few of my projects, but a lot of that needs a lot of work before I go unveiling it as I can be pretty particular about it.
I’m looking toward a future in the field of sound and/or music and am willing to go almost anywhere to do it. I love new experiences, meeting new people, and, most of all, producing quality work despite the odds.
—— About the institution. ——
At The Pennsylvania State University, I was schooled in the art of independent filmmaking. It set me up for a long course of watching sunrises out my apartment windows while between my iMac and a box of Chinese takeout, oblivious to the aural world outside my headphones (although I did discover that the birds start chirping around 4:20 AM during the spring in State College, PA). I was also taught by some of the best people I’ve ever met how to budget time and money to make a project that the crew and I were all truly invested in.
—— A little about everything else. ——
I’ve been pretty narrow about working in film sound, but I must say that I’ve found something great about the adrenaline rush of last-minute decisions involved with producing. The logistics of pre-production, production, and post-production are something I can really get wrapped up in.
I also enjoy working with actors and have, for the most part, practiced coaching realistically, placing the actor in a situation and asking them to respond ordinarily through their character’s point of view in the event of the extraordinary circumstance provided by the screenplay. I have also done a bit of acting in the past and try to pull from those situations, mainly the ones in which I found myself in front of the camera.
As far as screenwriting is concerned, that was something I discovered a small love for a little later in my college career and shortly after I graduated. I usually use character development to move the story along… yes, I love character pieces. I also have a great appreciation for snappy dialogue and wit as well as no dialogue at all. I also highly enjoy Films Noir and Italian Neorealism as well as any Hollywood Golden Age material. I pretty much love anything styled after the lovelies of the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, as well as the gritty realism of the American Zoetrope work of the 70’s.
—— Now that I’ve said too much… ——
